When it gets bad
In 2002, a Barrel Racer friend of mine told me about a guy she knew
who was a Polo player gone bankrupt. He was forced to get rid of his
six horses and so they would end up in the slaughter pen at the
auction as he had let them run down badly. He didn't want to put the
Thoroughbreds in the paper or sell them otherwise, as he was
ashamed.
J.J., saved in 2002
Taking action
She was able to get one of the horses the guy had. The gelding's name is J.J.
When I went to look at him to get him, he looked bad. He had already been
with her for a week and had put on some weight; still, he was skin and bones
with long thin hair. His mane was just a couple of inches long (Polo riders
keep the manes shaved) and flopping all over the place. Overall, he looked
scrubby and just bad.
Getting another
chance
J.J. has developed nicely. He took about twelve weeks to gain some
decent weight and his temperament back. He now has a strong spirit
and shows that he is a true full blooded Thoroughbred. He rides
absolutely smooth. You tap him once and he falls into a rocking
chair lope. He can turn on a dime. You can tell he was a Polo horse,
no doubt about it. He now belongs to my mom and calls a beautiful 140 acre ranch
in Meridian, TX his home.
Not so lucky His old friends were not that lucky as they couldn't be saved. They ended up
at the auction.

Quote: "What is the difference
between a horse and a steer and a hog?
The horse is an icon along with the bald eagle. What is the difference
between a bald eagle and a pigeon or a turkey? And if you do not know
the difference, we cannot explain it to you."
